Ann's Sturgis Vacation 2001 Highlight Page

Partially lifted from a letter coorespondence to Ann's Brother, Frank

We had a really good trip. It was a very bonding experience. We weren't apart for longer than it took to take a shower the whole time and got home and still didn't need to get away from each other.

One night we ended up riding too long simply cause there is nowhere to stop between Montana, Wyoming and Utah. We tried camping in the back yard of a hotel with their ok, too noisy so we picked up and moved. I had read a book about a serial killer from Spanish Fork, Utah and this junker car pulled into the lot and did a few donuts. Next stop was a state park campground out in B.F.E. with bigfoot. I wouldn't stay there so back on the road again for another 30 miles till we found a little town that had a K.O.A. that we couldn't find and all three hotels were full. We finally found the K.O.A. at about 11pm. It was down a dirt road and I was really beat by that time so wasn't a real happy camper. I kept apologizing for being such a pain and he just said it was no problem, and O.K. and don't keep apologizing! The place was totally dark except the shower house and a biker looking couple came walking out and said just pull up anywhere on the outside and pick a spot, there were plenty. It felt like home! So we woke up in the morning to find we had set up the tent so that we had two crusty piles of dog shit for a doormat. at least they were dry and crusty. We got back on the road in time to make rush hour through salt lake city. what a zoo. I don't know how Bruce could ride on the back. I could never handle not being in control of when I was going to get hit by a semi.

Oh, we road for at least 150 miles with a couple other bikes. I didn't know them but they let me stay in the lead. We were going through moutains and switch backs. It would have been a really fun road if it weren't so broken up. I left them behind several times. I'm sure I scared Bruce a few times going into corners. I could feel him tense up and grab on. If he had not tried anticipating my movements and leaning more than necessary I could have gone faster. I used to go find roads like that and go fast enough to drag the saddlebags on the road in the corners. Maybe I should buy that Ninja after all. Yeehah

Bruce has been trying to get me to write trip highlights. He has totally different "highlights" than I do. Mine are more about road kill and traffic and are the brakes going to give out. As we were on the downhill side of Glacier park the front brake was getting mushy and the back was really squealing. I finally just stayed in first or second gear as we didn't have cars behind us. Then I started thinking about the big gouge out of the center of the belt. Would it hold up if I downshifted hard or would it break and would we go plunging over the cliff?
